Gorbachev's Legacy
Even though Gorbachev`s career ended hectically, his legacy was never lost. He brought about the peaceful fall of the Soviet Union, which gave independence to many eastern European countries including Ukraine, Bulgaria, Moldova, Azerbaijan, and all of the Baltic states. Without him, the Berlin Wall may not have fallen. In 1990, Gorbachev won the Nobel Peace Prize for risking his power to end a conflict that could have resulted in another world war. Gorbachev was also named Time Magazine's "Man of the Year" in 1987, and 1989, for reforming the USSR's economy and bringing the country out of poverty.
