Process Paper
We were thinking of influential leaders, and at first, we agreed on Nelson Mandela. Our teacher, however, wanted us to pick a more original topic, since History Day will probably receive thousands of presentations on Mandela. With Mandela eliminated from a possible topic, we continued to brainstorm until one of us came up with the idea of Gorbachev. We didn't know anything about him besides that he was mentioned in Ronald Reagan's most famous speech, and since we knew Gorbachev was a more unique idea than Reagan, we decided to do our website on Gorbachev.
To conduct our research, we each made 90 notecards from four sources a person. We would take a source, find a section within the source that looked interesting, and take notes in our own words. We each did our 90 notecards separately, so we could come up with original ideas, and with 180 total notecards, we put together our website.
Our teacher, Ms. Svoboda, wanted us to create a website on an influential character. Though this project was mainly designed to teach us how to research, the best projects would be sent on to History Day. We had the choice of either doing the project solo, or in group of two. Both of us, having the experience of doing all of the work in a group project, did not really like the idea of doing the same amount of work, but having the expectations of a project with the use two brains rather than one.We are good friends, however, and one of us asked the other because we know that we are both very persistent and hard-working. We also knew that we were the most similar two people in our class when it comes to ideas, so we wouldn't argue about how to put together the website. We asked our teacher if we could work together, and she agreed knowing that we wouldn't just fool around since we both have put a lot of effort into projects in the past. We got together on weekends and worked diligently for many hours, and the outcome was much better than either of us could do alone.
The National History Day theme this year is influential leaders. We both believe that Mikhail Gorbachev is one of the best in this category. He brought about the fall of Communism in Europe and the collapse of the Soviet Union. This greatly impacted the eastern world today because if this had never happened, Eastern Europe and Russia would still be under Communist rule. From this occurrence, Gorbachev brought about the independence to many European countries, including Serbia, Hungary, Azerbaijan, the Baltic States, and many others that we can't say because in the process we would go over the 500 word limit. He still remains today an influential man for many other reasons. We have explained in our website, but once again explaining it here would use more words than we have been provided with.
